ABSTRACT

Dental fluorosis is characterized by a hypomineralization of the tooth structure caused by excessive intake of systemic fluoride. In the deciduous dentition, its early diagnosis is important since it will be a predictor for the appearance of lesions in the permanent dentition. The objective of this review was to describe the scientific evidence on dental fluorosis in deciduous dentition, reporting its etiology and related factors, prevalence, diagnosis and treatment. Electronic searches were conducted PubMed / Medline, EbscoHost and ScienceDirect (November / 2020) databases, using the keywords "dental fluorosis", "deciduous teeth", "primary tooth", "primary teeth". The development of Dental fluorosis in deciduous dentition was related to the intake of multiple sources of fluoride mainly; drinking water, diet foods, infant formulas, supplements and the use of luoridated toothpastes in inadequate doses. Some prenatal factors such as living in mountainous or high altitude terrain and living in places near coal-burning mines were also associated. The prevalence of dental fluorosis in early childhood reported in the studies varied between 6.2% and 96.6%, depending mainly on the concentration of fluoride in drinking water. For the diagnosis of dental fluorosis in the deciduous dentition, characteristics such as the location, appearance, extension and color of the lesion must be considered, making a differential diagnosis with other types of enamel and dentin defects. Evenly, the treatment of lesions will depend on the severity defects and individual patient conditions.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The aim is to assess the impact of socioeconomic factors on deciduous teeth eruption among infants born after low-risk pregnancy and infants diagnosed with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Materials and Methodology: The cross-sectional study included 110 neonates recruited at birth using stratified random sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Neonates diagnosed without IUGR were allocated to Group I (n = 55) and those diagnosed with IUGR were allocated to Group II (n = 55). The perinatal case history was recorded, followed by intraoral examination at birth, 6 months, and monthly up to 1 year or till first evidence of teeth eruption. Results: The difference between both groups based on socioeconomic status (SES) was found statistically significant (P = 0.043). The first evidence of eruption of deciduous teeth was found delayed in Group II (P = 0.0001). Secondary school education was found statistically significant between both the groups (P = 0.024). The difference between the two groups based on religion (P = 0.353) and gravidity (P = 0.571) was found statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Lower SES and secondary maternal education can be considered statistically significant risk factors of IUGR and delayed deciduous teeth eruption. No correlation of IUGR with religion and gravidity was found.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) affect the aesthetics and function of primary teeth and can cause sequelae in their permanent successors. This study assessed the distribution of TDIs and sequelae in the primary dentition and the respective permanent dentition in children treated at the Dental Trauma Centre in Brazil. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by collecting data from 256 dental records over 7 years. Descriptive statistical analyses and the Fisher exact test were used (p=0.05). Results: Sixty-two patients presented with trauma in the deciduous teeth. TDIs were observed mostly in boys (64.50%) and in the 2 to 4-year age group (44.10%); most injuries occurred from fall from the child's own height (40.30%) and at home (71.20%). The most common type of trauma was subluxation (22.90%). The most prevalent clinical and radiographic sequelae were mobility (45.60%) and periapical lesion (31.80%), respectively. Regarding the permanent dentition, the most frequent sequela was hypomineralization (33.30%). Conclusion:According to this study, TDIs in deciduous teeth made up 29.24% of all the cases in the Dental Trauma Program. The major type of trauma in children was subluxation, with sequelae in both dentitions. Follow-up after trauma is important to the maintenance of primary dentition and to prevent and treat possible sequelae in the permanent dentition.(AU)

(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Several orthodontic problems should already be treated at an early age to prevent the necessity of future complex and expensive procedures. Scientific evidence suggests that posterior crossbites, mild to moderate Class III, as well as certain Class II malocclusions, open bites and arch length discrepancies can benefit from simple, but efficient interceptive therapy. Objective: To summarize the existing evidence-based literature on early orthodontic treatment, and to illustrate its application and effectiveness by showcasing multiple clinical examples. Conclusion: Early short-term interceptive orthodontic treatment with simple appliances, in the deciduous or early mixed dentition phase, can efficiently correct certain malocclusions and help to either reduce the complexity or even avoid the necessity of complex and expensive procedures during puberty. For certain patients with significant arch length discrepancy the concept of serial extractions should be part of the orthodontic armamentarium.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The occlusal faceting has been determined as a sign of parafunction during adulthood, but it´s common to find such worn on the deciduous dentition considered as a physiological trait. Objective: To determine the prevalence of occlusal worn on the deciduous dentition of 6 years old students in a determined Mexican population. Methods: 52 plaster models of 6 years old children were assessed, on which the facets found in deciduous teeth, as terminal planes were registered. The Student t-test statistics and Chi-square test were used for data analysis. Results: The number of worn pieces was significantly higher in male than female children. The number of faceted parts by tooth type in each gender differed signifi cantly. The faceted infant pieces average did not differ signifi cantly between straight and mesial terminal plane. Nevertheless, trend (P<0.10) was obtained at a greater number of parts in the mesial faceted plane (13.71 ± 2.46; n2=14) than in the straight terminal plane (11.68 ± 4.30; n1=19). Conclusion: The evaluation of occlusal worn in the deciduous dentition in children affects equally both genders. There is a greater prevalence of worn by chewing movement on certain teeth and it differs according to gender.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To make an in vivo comparison of the amount of time required for root canal instrumentation of inferior deciduous molars either using rotary or manual techniques, and root canal filling of the same teeth.Material and Methods:Eight participants ranging from six to eight years of age that presented mandibular deciduous molars with root canal treatment indication were selected. Manual instrumentation with stainless steel K-files was performed in group I, and rotary instrumentation with Pro Taper rotary system was performed in group II.Results:T-test was used to determine mean value differences for the mesiolingual (ML) and distal (D) canals, showing no statistically significant differences (p = 0.912 and p = 0.366, respectively). The Mann-Whitney test was performed to detect mesiobuccal canal (MB) mean value differences, which were not statistically significant (p = 0.200). As to mean time required to perform canal filling for each group (manual and rotary) no statistically significant differences (p = 0.715) were found. Conclusion:Root canal preparation with rotary nickel-titanium instruments can be an alternative to mechanical instrumentation, although instrumentation and obturation time was not reduced

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study determined whether ‘chewing side preference’ (CSP) is correlated to ‘chewing side preference during the first chewing cycle’ (CSP1ºC) in the deciduous, mixed and permanent dentitions. Methods: Three-hundred subjects were divided in 3 groups: Group 1 – 100 children 3-5 years old, primary dentition; Group 2 – 100 children 6-12 years old, mixed dentition; Group 3 – 100 subjects 18-47 years old, permanent dentition. CSP was determined using a method developed by McDonnell et al. Subjects were given a piece of gum and the position of the chewing gum was recorded 7 times as right or left. Subjects were classified as ‘observed preferred chewing side’ (OPCS) when they performed 5/7, 6/7 or 7/7 strokes on the same side. OPCS corresponded to the CSP. CSP1ºC was determined using a method developed by Hoogmartens and Caubergh (1987). Subjects were given five pieces of gum and five pieces of bread and the position of the chewing gum at first chewing cycle was recorded as right or left. For each subject, an index (I) was performed. Chi-square (X2) and phi correlation (r) tests were used to investigate significant correlations between CSP and CSP1ºC. Results: There was a strong positive and significant correlation between CSP and CSP1ºC for primary dentition (p= 0.000; r = 0.82), for mixed dentition (p = 0.000; r = 0.81) and a very strong positive and significant correlation for permanent dentition (p = 0.000; r = 0.90). Conclusion: CSP can be significantly correlated to CSP1ºC for primary dentition, mixed dentition and permanent dentition, and these are strong positive relationships for primary and mixed dentitions and very strong positive relationship for permanent dentition.

ABSTRACT

Background: Occlusal characteristics of the primary dentition vary among populations and ethnic groups. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to record various primary dentition parameters in 700 Saudi children, 2-6 year-old, was divided into 4 age groups and was randomly selected to observe the differences between the age groups. Results: 55.6% of the children had a 'flush terminal plane' molar relationship. The proportion of children with distalstep molar relationship was significantly lower 23 (3.2%). The degree of overbite was significantly less in the 5-year-olds than in the 3-year-olds. The majority of the children (80.7%) had spaced dentition. The prevalence of anterior cross bite was 0.7% and of open bite was 0.3%.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Tooth eruption, recognized as an aspect of human growth and development, could possibly be influenced by a number of factors. It may reflect the general body development. Aim: The aim of the present research is to investigate the relationship of deciduous teeth emergence with physical growth (weight/height indices). Materials and Methods: A study was conducted among a sample of 1132 Egyptian infants whose ages range from 4 to 36 months. The sample was collected from some randomly selected health centers affiliated to the ministry of health where various socioeconomic strata from different geographic localities were recruited. The children visit there regularly for vaccination at definite ages. Weight and height were evaluated as factors that might have influence on the time of deciduous teeth emergence. Results: The results showed a certain degree of correlation between the number of deciduous teeth emerged and the studied anthropometric measurements which differed by sex and age. Conclusion: All anthropometric parameters showed relationship with the number of teeth at different levels. Although weight showed influence on the number of teeth emerged, it was less significant than height.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Assess the association between nonnutritive sucking habits and anterior open bite in the deciduous dentition of Japanese-Brazilian children. METHODS: 410 children of Japanese origin were assessed, 206 boys and 204 girls, between 2 and 6 years of age, in schools in São Paulo State, Brazil. Questionnaires concerning their nonnutritive sucking habits were sent to their legal guardians. Chi-square tests (p<0.05) were applied to assess the association between nonnutritive sucking habits and anterior open bite, and the logistic regression test to obtain the relative risk. RESULTS: The prevalence of sucking habits found in the sample was of 44.6% and for the anterior open bite, 4.4%. There was a statistically significant association between anterior open bite and sucking habits (O.R.=10.77), persistence of sucking habits from 2 to 4 years old (O.R.=22.06), and the persistence of sucking habits from 4 to 6 years old (O.R.=17.31). As for the interruption period of the habit, the group that had interrupted the habit for a period equal or inferior to six months showed an increased prevalence of open bite compared to the group without this habit or in which the habit was interrupted for more than six months. CONCLUSION: Japanese-Brazilian children that had sucking habits have greater chance of acquiring anterior open bite in the deciduous dentition.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the clinical effect of orthopedic-orthodontic treatment in crossbite in deciduous dentition through cephalmetric analysis. Methods 12 children with crossbite in deciduous dentition were enrolled in treatment group. Control group included 8 patients with normal deciduous dentition. Modified reverse headgear was used in each patient in the treatment group. Orthodontic force was a-bout 2. 94-4. 90 N (300-500 g) , and the direction of force was under occlusion plane for 37 degree. Each patient wore reverse headgear for 10 hour per day. Orthodontic treatment lasted for 6 months, and then orthodontic treatment began at once. Orthodontic treatment was not over until crossbite was corrected. The cephalmetric change was compared between two groups before treatment (T1) , after orthopedic treatment (T2)and after orthodontic treatment (T3). The effect of orthopedic-orthodontic treatment was analyzed in two group. Results Crossbite was corrected successfully in all patients in the treatment group. After treatment, A point moved forward by 2. 8mm, Is-FHp increased 8. 38 mm, <SNA increased 2. 65, incisors in mandible moved backward a little bit. All these changes were statistical different as compared with those in the control group. Conclusion Skeletal and dental deformity are improved progressively after combined orthopedic-orthodontic treatment. It is recommended to perform orthopedic-orthodontic therapy in skeletal crossbite in deciduous dentition.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine correlations of ten non-metric dental crown traits NMDCT (Carabelli, hipocon2, enamel bridge, metaconule, protostylid, deflecting wrinkle, pattern cusp, cusp number and 6 and 7 cusp) between deciduous second upper (um2) and low (lm2) molars, permanent first upper (UM1) and lower (LM1) molars and permanent second upper (UM2) and lower (LM2) molars were studied. Materials y methods: This descriptive study determines the correlation of ten NMDCT through of the frequency and variability, observed on 201 dental casts of Cali racially mixed population, 84 dental casts of Puerto Tejada African-Colombian population and 60 dental casts of Colombian Amazons natives. Results: The Colombian Amazon natives showed high correlation in Carabelli and cusp number between um2/UM1; and very high in metaconule and pattern cusp. Cali racially mixed population showed moderated correlation in Carabelli, deflecting wrinkle and pattern cusp between um2/UM1; and high in 6 cusp. And between UM1/UM2/LM1/LM2 moderate in deflecting wrinkle; and high in protostylid, pattern cusp and 6 cusp. Puerto Tejada African-Colombian population showed moderated correlation between UM1/UM2/LM1/LM2 in deflecting wrinkle; and high in protostylid, pattern cusp and 6 cusp. Conclusions: Findings support the proposal of morphogenetic field theory, which exposes that the key tooth in deciduous and permanent molars is um2/lm2 because it retains the basic configuration of contact and number of cusps pattern, so UM1/UM2/LM1/LM2 will vary according to ethnic origin and to the environmental influence of each of three studied ethnic groups.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Recently, diagrams have been developed in order to analyze normality and malocclusion in the deciduous dentition. AIM: The aim of this study is to apply the diagrams developed by Long in 59 cast models of normal dentitions (group A) and 139 abnormal (group B), in order to evaluate its clinical efficiency before the known clinical criteria, which characterizes normal occlusion and malocclusion. METHODS: Group A, with 118 casts of patients with normal occlusion, was stratified in 42 models of superior arches and 36 of inferior ones of type I of Baume; 17 superior casts and 23 inferior ones of arches of type II. Group B, with 278 casts with different types of malocclusions, was composed of 78 superior arches and 75 inferior ones of type I; 61 superior arches and 64 inferior ones of type II. A total of 396 casts were examined. RESULTS: The Kappa test between diagrams and clinical criteria demonstrated low concordance between diagnosis of normality and abnormality of the dentition, regardless of the type of arch evaluated. The diagrams disagree in 78 percent of the cases clinically diagnosed as normal and in 20 percent of those with morphological errors. CONCLUSION: the proposed diagrams don't apply to the primary dentition evaluation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Introduction: for many years, anthropological studies of sub-adult contemporary samples suggest that a low sex dimorphism expressed in morphology patterns exist. The objective was to evaluate the sex dimorphism in a sample of sub adults from Cordoba City, Argentina using dental dimensions in deciduous teeth. Methods: this article describes the dental dimorphism in a sample of 98 sub-adults with deciduous dentition from Córdoba City, Argentina. Mesial -distal and buccal-lingual diameters of the deciduous dentition were taken and the data was analyzed with Weighted Boundary (WB) index and multivariate discriminate stepwise analysis. Results and conclusion: an alternative technique for gender determination using the deciduous dentition is proposed. Nine variables that expressed highly significant differences were selected, among them, BL UM1 correctly predicting male gender in 90.9% and female gender in 93.7% of the cases.

ABSTRACT

Anterior crossbite is a common malocclusion in the early deciduous dentition. Even today, many these malocclusion patients are not treated until the mixed or permanent dentition. And the purpose here is to emphasize the need for early diagnosis and possible treatment for these anterior crossbite malocclusions and their associated facial patterns. Case histories of 4 patients selected from the author's practice are presented. Different methods of treatment are evaluated. Some improvement was achieved in all patients from an early interceptive regimen, although ultimately corrective orthodontic treatment may still be needed in some. It is concluded that early interception of deciduous anterior crossbite malocclusion should by attempted in patients; there should be no delemma in reaching such a decision. And it is essential for diagnosis and treatment to determine exact variations in growth when some appliance are used, it is recommended that growth-related records be made as early as possible.
